Relaxing yet invigorating, quiet yet enthralling,
historic yet modern. All words to describe the charming provincial
Hungarian town of Mosonmagyaróvár. Situated just 20 minutes away from
both the Austrian and Slovakian boarders, this is an ideal location
for a holiday for just about anyone.
The town itself has its origin in Roman times and
has been a favourite destination for discerning Austrian and German
visitors for many years. They are drawn not only by the world renowned
and recently renovated thermal baths that are famous for their
curative effects, but also for reasonably priced, yet stylish shops in
a relaxing and historic setting.
The heart of the old town is Magyar ut which is
crammed with a wide variety of shops and of course cafés, bars and
restaurants that offer traditional Hungarian delicacies and of course
cakes and pastries (not for the weight-watcher!).
Another reason for a visit lies with the
world-record that is held by the town. According to wikipedia,
Mosonmagyaróvár has the largest number of dentists per head of
population anywhere in the world. And with over 150 surgeries and 350
practising dentists to be found, standards are high, treatment is
modern and of top quality and yet prices are low compared with much of
the rest of Western Europe.
If the peace and quiet becomes too much it is just
a 40 minute car journey to Bratislava and 60 to the heart of Vienna in
Austria. Bratislava has had something of a rebirth in the last few
years and has successfully combined its historic heart with a fast
developing, modern, world class city. One measure of its success is
Slovakias adoption of the euro currency in 2009.
As an alternative, a visit to Vienna provides all
the sophistication that any traveller can need. Designer shops, cafés,
restaurants and historical sights abound and an easy train journey
takes the traveller straight to the historic heart.
Although often neglected as a holiday destination,
this part of Western Transdanubia can offer something for everyone!
